Secretive and solitary heron, breeding in a broad band around 50th latitude from Western Europe and UK to Eastern Asia, and in South Africa. Migratory, but more patchily breeding populations further south in Europe are mainly resident. Population still large, but decreasing due to habitat destruction, degradation and fragmentation, not yet leading to a trend below the thresholds to be classified as Vulnerable. Strong preference for quiet lowland marshes around lakes and rivers with extensive reedbeds. Diet consists of fish and amphibians and variety of other small animals.

The species occurs in the forest-tundra and boreal taiga zones, inhabiting moderately dense coniferous or mixed coniferous-deciduous forests near open areas like marshes and meadows. It has circumpolar distribution across the Holarctic – North America (from Alaska to Newfoundland) and Eurasia (Fennoscandia through Siberia) (Duncan, Duncan 2020). In Europe, it is confined exclusively to N & C Fennoscandia and N Russia (Keller et al. 2020).

Mainly resident species; sometimes undertake eruptive long-distance movements in response to feeding requirements (Duncan, Duncan 2020).

Its population trend in Europe is unknown. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

The species occupies for breeding mosaic habitats of moist open peatlands and tundra with low grass, sedge and moss vegetation among conifer and birch forests and scrubland. After breeding season it occurs on various types of brackish and freshwater wetlands. Its breeding range extends from N Fennoscandia & NW Russia across N Siberia to Chukotka. Finland holds about half of the European breeders (Keller et al. 2020Van Gils et al. 2020).

N Eurasian-African migrant. European populations overwinter in W & S Europe, N & W Africa.

The overall population trend is stable, but some populations have unknown trends. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (Birdlife International 2021).

western Capercaillie occupies mainly mature forest and woodland, primarily coniferous, but also mixed coniferous-deciduous and, locally, deciduous woodlands (de Juana & Kirwan 2020). Its range covers the vast taiga zone from Scandinavia to Siberia E of Baikal Lake as well as a discontinuous mountain-based distribution in C & S Europe and Scotland. Fennoscandia and Russia are the European strongholds. it is mainly resident, often with local movements in response to feeding requirements with occasional, irruptive long-distance movements (de Juana & Kirwan 2020).
