A secretive crake inhabiting grasslands in natural habitats and flooding plains across Europe, from the British Isles to eastern Siberia, wintering in the eastern part of Austral Africa, from southern Tanzania to South Africa (Walther et al. 2012). In Europe, large populations in the North, e.g. southern Finland and Russia, but now highly fragmented and declining populations in the West.

Entirely marine species which breeds on rocky, sandy or coral islands, preferring densely vegetated sites in temperate regions but barren sites in the tropics (Gochfeld & Burger 2020). It has wide but fragmented distribution across the globe, occurring mostly in the tropical and subtropical belt worldwide, with some populations at temperate latitudes. European distribution includes primarily the British Isles, W France and the Azores (Keller et al. 2020), with birds migrating to Africa (mainly W Africa) for the winter.

The species occurs in open habitats with little or low vegetation – steppe-like grasslands, pastures, cultivations, also in and around human settlements where it primarily breeds in Europe. Its breeding range extends from the Mediterranean region (S Europe and N Africa) to S Siberia and N China (Orta & Kirwan 2020). About half of the European population is located in Spain (Keller et al. 2020).

Eurasian-African migrant. The European populations winter primarily in sub-Saharan Africa.

Its population trend in Europe is stable on a short-term and increasing – on a long-term basis. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2022).

Mid-sized and ground-nesting owl, occurring in a wide range of open habitats, such as marshes, grasslands, and tundra. It has wide distribution across the Holarctic, the Neotropics and some Pacific Islands. In Europe, the species is well presented in NW, N & E regions, it has patchy distribution in C Europe and is almost absent in the S (Keller et al. 2020).

Intra-European partial migrant. N populations fully migratory, those to the S thought to be largely resident.

Its population trend in Europe is fluctuating. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

Barred Warbler breeds across a broad range from C Europe to C Asia; overwinters, however, within a relatively small area in E Africa, mainly in Kenya (BirdLife International 2021). It is a forest bird but can occur in open woodland from woodland margins to thorny bushes, clearings with rich undergrowth, hedgerows, even orchards and urban parks. Mostly insectivorous; with fruit being taken in the non-breeding season.

The smallest of the divers, with a large circumpolar breeding range north of the 60th latitude. Nests solitarily on shores and islands of freshwater pools and lakes in open moorland, bog and peatland habitats, also on well-vegetated tundra lakes. Diet consists of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, frogs, insects, worms and plant matter. Fully migratory, moving to coast and south after breeding. Winters offshore along sheltered coasts, occasionally inland on lakes, pools, reservoirs and rivers. European population is estimated at 42,100-93,000 pairs, trend decreasing.

Medium-sized thrush, feeds mainly on invertebrates in spring and early summer, seeds and fruits, in winter found around juniper thickets feeding on its berries (Ryall & Briggs 2006). Nominate torquatus breeds in Scandinavia, Britain, Ireland and Brittany; alpestris in mountains of C and S Europe; amicorum in Caucasus and E Turkey. Torquatus prefers open moorland or fell; alpestris conifer woodlands, especially margins near moist open grass or moors; amicorum upper forest belts, rhododendron thickets and in shrubs on cliffs, nests often on ground. The european population is stable and the status is Least Concern. Migratory to resident.

The species occupies various types of tundra habitats – from typical to shrub tundra and floodplains in forest tundra. Outside breeding season it occurs on variety of inland and coastal wetland types (Van Gils et al. 2020). Species’ breeding range extends across most of the Arctic and sub-Arctic from Fennoscandia to Chukotka. European population is concentrated in most of Norway, and in the N parts of Sweden, Finland and Russia (Keller et al. 2020).

Long-distance migrant, the European populations overwinter mostly in sub-Saharan Africa (but mainly N of the equator).

Its population trend in Europe is stable. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).
