Small, all black tern breeding colonially in well-vegetated fresh or brackish wetlands. Disjunct breeding range in W Europe, has declined greatly in W Europe due to habitat destruction and eutrophication (Beintema 1997). More common in E. Europe, range also includes W Asia and N America. Strongly migratory, travelling both at sea and over land. European birds winter Africa. Diet predominantly insects. Nest built in shallow water or floating on aquatic vegetation. Gathers in large flocks during post-breeding period. European population estimated at 74,400-154,000 breeding pairs, decreasing.

A long-distance migratory dove breeding from England and Wales to the Urals, Kazakhstan, the Middle East and N Africa, but absent from the N. The nominate subspecies occurs across Europe, ssp. arenicola from Morocco to Iran, maybe the Balearic islands; and ssp. rufescens in deserts in Libya and Egypt. Winters across the Sahel. Strongly declining for decades, with an almost 80% reduction in the European breeding populations over the last 40 years.

Breeds in the Arctic and it has a circumpolar distribution, though some birds can reach wintering sites at very S latitudes, often after heavy storms/harsh conditions within the boreal region (Olsen & Larsson 2004). Four subspecies; L. h. hyperboreus is the one breeding in N Europe. Strategies vary from resident to partial migrant (Petersen et al. 2015).

A very broad breeding range, from E Europe to Asia, also in Africa, Oceania and America (BirdLife International 2021). Absent as a breeding bird in W Europe until recent times; nowadays it also breeds from France to Sweden, also UK (Lawicki 2014, Wlodarczyk et al. 2020). Absent from the boreal region and in deserts. N populations are migratory and S populations, resident. In W Europe it is common during the non-breeding season.

Long-distance migrant with an extremely large breeding range covering most of Europe and Asia. In Europe only absent in the high-Arctic. Wintering range in rainforests of sub-Saharan Africa. Feeds on large Lepidoptera caterpillars. Obligate brood parasite of smaller songbirds commonly found in coniferous and deciduous woodlands, scrubs, heathlands, meadows, reedbeds and moorlands. Parasitizes commonly available hosts like Reed Warbler, Meadow Pipit, Common Redstart and Dunnock. European breeding population 5,960,000-10,800,000. Declining trend.

Small heron with a large, discontinuous range from W Europe to E Kazakhstan, and Africa S. of equator. In Europe, N to Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Estonia. Similar taxa on other continents recently elevated to species level. Breeds in freshwater marshes with reeds, rushes or other dense vegetation, bushes and trees. Also other aquatic environments. Migratory, African population resident. Very dispersive. Diet insectivorous. European population 63,100-111,000 pairs, seriously declined due to habitat destruction and pollution, and increased mortality in Africa due to drought and desertification.
