Green Sandpiper breeds in various types of moist, forested landscapes, generally avoiding large open areas. Outside the breeding season it occurs on a variety of primarily freshwater habitats, generally not associated with woodlands. Its breeding range stretches from Scandinavia and C Europe to E Siberia with European strongholds in Russia, Finland and Sweden (Keller et al. 2020, Van Gils et al. 2020). It is a Eurasian-African migrant with European populations wintering mostly in W & S Europe, the Mediterranean region and W and C Africa.

The smallest of terns breeding in Europe. Colonial breeder, occupying various types of open coastal and inland water-fringed habitats. Almost exclusively coastal in N Europe, elsewhere riverine, sometimes in quarries, often far inland or occasionally (in E Europe) in meadows or on flat roofs of buildings. The species has patchy distribution throughout most of Europe, Africa, Middle East, C, S & E Asia, and Australia (Gochfeld et al. 2020, Keller et al. 2020). European populations are migratory, the wintering grounds being largely in Africa.

Well-known, small wader found on nearly all beaches of the world during non-breeding. Breeds on high arctic barren, stony tundras of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Svalbard and northernmost Russia, feeding on insects and their larvae. Long-distance migrant reaching Tierra del Fuego, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Gathers in flocks during non-breeding on open sandy beaches, rocky shores, and sandy parts of mudflats, feeding on variety of small prey. Distinctive behaviour on beaches running along edges of surf, where prey is more easily available. European population 25,000-50,000, all breeding on Greenland. Trend unknown.

Medium-sized waterbird, introduced from Africa into England in 17th century, from where spread to W Europe. Established breeding populations in Great Britain, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, SW Sweden and Poland. European population at least 26,000 breeding pairs (Gyimesi & Lensink 2012). Resident, but dispersive after breeding season and undertakes moult migrations. Long breeding season, breeding success high in Europe but not England (Lensink 1999). Diet grass and other plants, crops. Occurs anywhere near water, nests on ground or in cavities, uses other birds’ nests.

The smallest nocturnal raptor in Europe. It prefers coniferous or mixed forests, with access to open areas such as clearings, moors, meadows or avalanche pathways. The species is widely distributed across the boreal zone of Eurasia from Scandinavia through Siberia to NE China and Sakhalin Is; in addition, it has fragmented distribution in the mountains of S, C & E Europe (Holt et al. 2020). Russia holds the European stronghold of species population (Keller et al. 2020).

The species is mostly resident but irregularly irruptive in N Europe (Mikkola 1983).

Its population trend in Europe is stable. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).
