Long-distance migrant passerine breeding in mires of flooded plains in C and E Europe. There has been a steep decline in recent decades due to habitat destruction. Most remaining populations are in Poland and Belarus, with some in Lithuania and Russia and a relict population in Pomerania, Germany. Winters in flooded Sahelian grasslands in W Africa, S Mauritania, Senegal and Mali (Salewski et al. 2009Poluda et al. 2012).

The species breeds in various types of shallow freshwater wetlands rich in vegetation. Outside breeding season occurs on open standing waters and marine (coastal) waters. Its breeding range covers most of Europe (excl. N parts), S & E Africa, Asia (discontinuous range), W & C North America (Llimona et al. 2020). The European population largely concentrated in Russia and Ukraine (74%) (Keller et al. 2020).

Intra-Eurasian migrant. Most birds fully migratory, some locally resident to the S. Mediterranean region/ S Europe hold the major wintering grounds. Its population trend in Europe is considered unknown. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

The species occurs in sunny, open landscapes rich in steep slopes of soft soil (riverbanks, pits, loess walls) and large flying insects. Its distribution extends from NW Africa and Iberian Peninsula N to Denmark and E to W Mongolia and NW China (Bastian & Bastian 2022).

In Europe, the species occurs mostly in S & E Europe, with patchy distribution in C Europe. European strongholds are located in Spain in SE Europe (Russia, Ukraine, E Balkan Peninsula), Asia Minor (Keller et al. 2020).

Eurasian-African migrant. European populations winter in W, E & S Africa.

Its European population trend is stable on a short-term. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2022).

Great Grey Shrike breeds in semi-open or open habitats in subarctic and temperate climates with scattered trees, bushes, fence-posts and powerlines, forest edges and clearings in the N, sometimes marshland and peat bogs. Non-breeding habitats are similar. Its wide distribution covers most of Europe E to C Siberia, C & S Asia, N Africa & the Middle East (Yosef et al. 2020). The European strongholds are in Fennoscandia & CE Europe (Keller et al. 2020). It is an intra-Eurasian migrant, with winter quarters generally S of the breeding sites.

Very large breeding range, from Iberia to E Asia (lacking from driest regions in C Asia); also in Africa S of the Sahara and in S Asia. These last ‘southern’ populations are resident and the ones in Europe and the northern part of Asia, migratory (BirdLife International 2021). European populations winter across the Sahelian wetlands (Zwarts et al. 2009).

A raptor widely distributed across much of the Old World, including Oceania (BirdLife International 2021). Migratory strategies vary from resident to migratory. European black kites overwinter in tropical Africa across the Sahelian belt up to S Africa. An increasing number of birds overwinter in S Europe [e.g. Morganti & Pulido 2012Literak et al. 2017).

Very large breeding range: S Europe up to E Asia, Africa, southern part of N America to southern S America (BirdLife International 2021). Behaviour from resident to migratory. European birds spend the winter from tropical to S Africa, though a progressively higher proportion of them are now seen overwintering in S Europe (but these birds may comprise less than 1% of the European population).
