Breeds scattered within the Mediterranean. Overwinters within the Mediterranean and W Africa (up to Senegambia) (BirdLife International 2021). Migratory (Olsen & Larsson 2004), though an increasing number of birds are resident due to the occurrence of abundant and predictable food in some places (Oro & Martínez-Abraín 2009).

In Europe ssp. gibraltariensis breeds east to Ukraine and Crimea. Birds of central and northwest Europe are migrants, wintering mainly in the Mediteranean area, including north Africa, but also in small numbers in Britain and western France. Birds of southern Europe are mainly resident. Breeds in rocky, stony terrain, including cliffs. Often uses walls and roofs of buildings as nest-site. Feeds on small invertebrates but also fruit and seeds. Population is stable in most countries but has increased in northwest Europe.

A colonial corvid with a breeding distribution covering most of Europe, except Mediterranean and Arctic climates. In Fennoscandia, restricted to the SW and W coast of Finland. N European and Russian populations are migratory, spreading across more S latitudes from N Spain to Turkey in winter (Waterhouse 1949), although this is not reflected in the recovery map which shows most birds in W Europe.

In Europe, the species favours coastal habitats (mudflats, wetlands of salt or brackish water) but is also present on inland (including arid land) freshwater wetlands. Its breeding range covers Europe (patchy coastline and inland distribution, two core areas – NW/W and SE Europe) and Asia (from E Mediterranean to C Asia and NE China) (Carboneras, Kirwan, 2020).

Intra-Eurasian partial migrant. Largely resident in W Europe and locally in C & S Europe, well defined moult migration of W European birds to aggregations in the Wadden Sea and elsewhere. Scattered wintering grounds at lower latitudes, S to N Africa.

A large shearwater present in the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, dispersing in the Indian Ocean too. Now largely recognized as two distinct species: Cory’s Shearwater C. borealis, from the East Atlantic Ocean, breeding from Berlengas (off Portugal), Canary Islands to Madeira and the Azores; and Scopoli’s Shearwater C. diomedea, breeding in the Mediterranean Sea, with a few pairs on the Atlantic coast of France.

Small passerine, feeds on small and medium-sized insects and other invertebrates. Ssp. rubicola: W and S Europe and N Africa to Middle East; hibernans: Britain, Ireland, coastal W France and W coast of Iberian Peninsula. Inhabits wide variety of dry plains and hillsides, characterized by scattered bushes, shrubs, stones, walls, or fences 1 m or more high. The population is stable and the status is Least Concern. Nominate subspecies breeding from Spain to Fennoscandia and Russia, wintering along European and N African coasts. A few orientalis visit E Mediterranean coasts. There have been long-term declines in breeding numbers across Europe, so the speices is listed as Near Threatened at the global scale (Brown 2015).
