Critically endangered ibis, with a highly restricted range in southern Morocco, and former relict populations in Syria that might be extinct now. Several ongoing reintroduction projects, with acclimated birds in Birecik, East Turkey, and reintroduced birds in Spain and Austria. Formerly more largely distributed across southern Europe, attested by Middle Age archaeological finds.

Gunther Zieger

A diving duck with a high latitude, circumpolar breeding distribution, restricted in Europe to the Nordic countries and Siberian Russia. Winters mainly at sea or on coastal eutrophic lagoons in W and N Europe, with very small numbers on inland lakes in C Europe and along Mediterranean coasts. The European wintering population of Greater Scaup has declined significantly over the last 20 years, apparently because of short stopping and changes in food resources on the wintering grounds  (Cervencl & Fernandez 2012, Marchowski et al. 2020).

Large-sized nocturnal raptor breeding in extensive mature stands of boreal or coniferous forest, favouring areas with openings such as bogs and small fields. Outside breeding season sometimes occurs in other habitats, incl. close to human settlements (Bull, Duncan, 2020).

The species shows variable migration patterns. In can be resident or nomadic depending on prey abundance. Widely distributed across the boreal zone of North America and Eurasia (from Fennoscandia to NE China and E Russia, in Europe S to Poland, Belarus and Ukraine) (Keller et al. 2020).

Its population trend in Europe is increasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

The species occupies for breeding deep freshwater lakes, preferably with islets and other inaccessible nesting sites, located mostly in taiga and boreal zone, less often in tundra. During winter it occurs mostly on marine (coastal) waters, but also deep inland wetlands. Its breeding range extends across N Eurasia, from Scotland and Scandinavia to E Siberia, Kamchatka, Chukotka and extreme NW Alaska (Carboneras, Garcia, 2020).

Intra-Eurasian migrant. European population overwinters on most sea coasts S from Fennoscandia, as well as locally inland.

Its population trend in Europe is decreasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

The species breeds on various shallow lakes, slow-flowing rivers and flooded riverside woods, occupying tree holes for nesting. Outside breeding season occurs on larger ice-free freshwater and brackish wetlands, including coastal waters (Carboneras, Kirwan, 2020). Its breeding range includes the boreal zone from N Fennoscandia to E Siberia, the European strongholds being in N boreal Sweden, Finland and Russia (Keller et al. 2020).

Intra-European migrant. Winters on lakes and coasts throughout Europe, mostly NW part, Baltic and Mediterranean/ Black Sea region.

Not globally threatened but considered Vulnerable in European context (Carboneras, Kirwan, 2020).

The species occupies sparsely vegetated semi-arid, arid and steppe grassland habitats; it is locally adapted to arable land, occurs on coastal dunes, and stony fields (Hume et al. 2020). Its distribution extends from the S half of Europe to C Asia, Middle East and N Africa. European species strongholds are located in France, Spain and locally in SE & E Europe (Keller et al. 2020).

Most European populations are migratory, the wintering grounds being in N & NE Africa. Iberian & N African populations are considered largely resident.

Its population trend in Europe is increasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

Leaves breeding rage in winter when frequents large wetland areas scattered from southern Spain to south-East China, including the Middle East and some African spots. Hybridize with Lesser Spotted Eagle in Baltic states, and hybrids can display intermediate migratory strategies.
