The species is a colonial breeder, occupying small islets and seacliffs of larger islands; infrequently breeds on mainland coasts. In its winter quarters in Madagascar, it inhabits open woodland and forest, as well as various types of wetlands.  Its global range includes the Mediterranean Sea (E to Cyprus), the Canary Is and NW Africa (Morocco). Europe holds 95% of the species population, Aegean Sea keeping the stronghold with 90% of the European population (Keller et al. 2020Orta et al. 2020).

European-African migrant. The species winters mainly in Madagascar.

Its population trend in Europe is stable. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2022).

A freshwater diving duck, with a fragmented distribution from Central and South Europe to North Africa, Central Asia and Mongolia. Wintering within breeding range but also across the Sahel, in the Middle East to South East Asia. The species is listed as Near-Threatened because of rapid declines in European numbers (Robinson and Hughes 2006).

The species occupies for breeding mostly steppes (and other grassland habitat types, sometimes even agricultural fields) and semi-deserts, usually in close proximity to wetlands like streams and shallow lakes. Its breeding range extends from S Ukraine and possibly E Turkey across C Asia to NE China (Archibald et al. 2020). In Europe it is confined to two separate regions – Crimea/ Azov Sea and Caspian Sea Lowland in S European Russia (Keller et al. 2020).

Long-distance migrant. European populations winter mostly in NE Africa.

Its population trend in Europe is decreasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2022).

The species occupies various types of open coastal and inland water-fringed habitats, breeding on bare or sparsely vegetated beaches and dunes, islands, banks, flats, salt-marshes, saltpans etc (Molina et al. 2020). Globally distributed across the middle latitudes of all continents. Apart from a small population by the North Sea, most European populations are located in the Mediterranean/ Black Sea region and SW Russia. European strongholds are in Spain & Ukraine (Keller et al. 2020).

Eurasian-African/Asian migrant. European populations winter largely in Africa.

Its population trend in Europe is increasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

Medium-sized raptor, feeds mainly on nests, larvae, pupae, and adults of social wasps, hornets, bumble-bees; also other insects, small animals, nestlings and eggs of birds. Monotypic, breeds in Europe except Ireland, W and N Scandinavia, N Russia and parts of Iberia and Balkan, mainly in forests with ample clearings, glades, or rides, where light soil suitable for digging. Population stable, hence status is Least Concern. Migratory; almost entirely a summer visitor to Europe. Migrate mostly using thermals also capable of crossing large water bodies using non-stop flapping flights (Vansteelant & Agostini 2021).

The species breeds on fresh or brackish waters occupying small natural and shallow wetlands with abundant vegetation. During migration and winter occurs mostly on marine (coastal) waters, usually less than 10-20m in depth. It has circumpolar distribution – the breeding range covers most of N & NW Europe, the taiga belt E to Kamchatka, N & NW North America (Stedman 2020). The abundance hotspots in Europe are N Iceland, E Sweden, SW Finland and Russia (Keller et al. 2020).

Intra-European migrant. Outside breeding season moves further S or to nearby seas.

Its population trend in Europe is decreasing. Evaluated as “Vulnerable” (BirdLife International 2021).

Found in S Europe, the Middle East across to India, and Africa (BirdLife International 2021). Populations vary from resident to long-distance migrant. In Europe, most individuals move to the sub-Saharan belt in summer/autumn where they spend the winter; some populations from islands, like Sicily, the Balearics and the Canaries are resident (BirdLife International 2021, Di Vittorio et al. 2016). Wintering in continental Spain also documented (Morant et al. 2020).
