Widespread gamebird across much of Palaearctic region (Cramp & Simmons 1983). Breeds mainly in boreal and temperate woodlands, from Portugal to E Asia, also in some sub-tropical Atlantic archipelagos in Macaronesia (Cramp & Simmons 1983). Woodcocks from N Eurasia are migratory and those from SW Europe, resident (Hoodless 1995).

Unmistakable black-and-white wader with upcurved bill. Disjunct breeding area in Europe; from Spain along W coast to Denmark, S Sweden and Baltic; inland breeders in Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria and Greece, Turkey, E to China. European population 58,400-74,300 breeding pairs, trend uncertain. Migratory in N part of range, partially migratory or resident further S. Breeds colonially in all kinds of shallow saline or brackish wetlands, migrates in loose flocks. Diet is a variety of aquatic invertebrates. Breeding success varies greatly due to weather and predation (Hötker & Segebade 2000).

The species occupies various types of semi-open habitats with sparse vegetation on the ground – open forest, clearings, woodland with low undergrowth, wooded pasture, orchard, unimproved meadowland with scattered trees etc. Its breeding range covers the temperate zone of Eurasia – from the Iberian Peninsula to Japan (Winkler et al. 2020).

Widely distributed in Europe, apart from the British Isles, most of Greece and the extreme N of NW Russia (Keller et al. 2020).

Eurasian-African migrant wintering mostly in Sahel; some populations winter in SW Europe.

Its population trend in Europe is currently increasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2020).

Medium-sized raptor, feeds chiefly on ground and marsh animals, in variety of species and sizes depending on local circumstances. Nominate aeruginosus: W and C Palearctic; harterti: Morocco to Tunisia. Strongly prefers shallow, standing, fresh or brackish waters with tall standing reeds Phragmites, reedmace Typha, and other dense emergent aquatic growth, without many or widespread trees. Population stable. Aeruginosus migratory in N and E to merely dispersive in S, harteri resident. N populations leapfrog over more S populations during migration (Panuccio et al. 2013).

Rather large wader, males during breeding with distinctive coloured ‘ruff’, that occurs in three colour morphs. Males also have a rare cryptic female-like morph. Males gather on leks where displaying for visiting females, that then breed solitary or in loose colonies, often far away from lek. Breeds primarily in open tundra in Europe and Asia, but in western part of range also pastures, grasslands, peat bogs and other open habitats close to wetlands. European population is 265,000-1,650,000 lekking males, with a decreasing trend. Virtually extinct in SW part of European breeding area.

Breeds on bare or sparsely vegetated shores of freshwater lakes and rivers, frequently artificial and temporary habitats, also agricultural ponds (Guilherme et al. 2019). Diet mainly insects, also small crustaceans, mussels, worms and snails. European population estimated at 134,000-262,000 breeding pairs, decreasing.

One of the smallest wader species. It occupies for breeding mostly high Arctic tundra, nesting primarily on dry ground, often among dwarf willows near swampy areas. Outside breeding season it occurs on variety of inland and coastal wetland types. Its breeding range stretches from N Scandinavia through S Novaya Zemlya Is and N Siberia to New Siberian Is (Van Gils et al. 2020). N Russia holds the core area of the species’ breeding range in Europe (Keller et al. 2020).

Eurasian-African long-distance migrant. W populations winter in S Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Its population trend in Europe is stable. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2022).
